Heart rate is the number of beats per minute. Heart-rate variability describes variation in the timing between successive beats. At rest, those intervals are not perfectly uniform, and the pattern is influenced by the autonomic nervous system. Consumer wearables often summarize nocturnal or morning HRV into a value that feeds readiness and recovery scores.
That sounds like a direct window into “stress.” It is closer to a signal with many possible inputs. Age, genetics, posture, breathing, training, sleep, alcohol, illness, menstrual-cycle phase, medication, and the timing and method of measurement can all matter. A lower value than yesterday may be meaningful—or may be noise.
Compare like with like, especially when the unit looks scientific.
Different devices may use different sensors, sampling periods, artifact correction, and HRV metrics. RMSSD and SDNN are not interchangeable, and a night-long photoplethysmography estimate is not the same protocol as a short electrocardiogram. Moving between brands can create a new baseline even when the person has not changed.
Five longitudinal studies published in 2025 found associations between resting wearable HRV and several health domains, supporting its potential as a biomarker while emphasizing the need for further research. A 2026 systematic review of wearable HRV and systemic inflammation concluded it should remain exploratory or adjunctive pending standardized longitudinal validation and formal diagnostic-performance studies.
It does not prove that raising HRV directly improves health, that a low number identifies overtraining or inflammation, or that comparing your value with another person's is useful.
A pattern becomes more useful when context travels with it.
Instead of asking “Is 38 bad?”, ask whether the measurement is reliable, how it compares with your usual range under the same conditions, whether the change persists, and what else changed. A single low point after late alcohol and poor sleep tells a different story from a multi-week shift with symptoms.
- Keep the device and timing stable. Consistency reduces avoidable measurement variation.
- Use a rolling baseline. A personal range matters more than an internet leaderboard.
- Record context sparingly. Illness, unusually hard training, travel, alcohol, and major sleep disruption can help explain a trend.
- Do not force the number upward. Slow breathing can change a reading without solving the reason you are concerned.
- Let function and symptoms speak. Energy, mood, performance, pain, and illness signs deserve attention too.
Ignoring the score can sometimes be the data-informed choice.
If a low value reliably increases anxiety or changes behavior despite feeling well, hide it for a week and follow a preplanned training range. Useful monitoring should improve decisions, not make every morning a test. Persistent symptoms matter whether the wearable agrees or not.
HRV is best treated as a device-specific personal trend under reasonably standardized conditions. Use it as one vote beside sleep, symptoms, recent load, and life context—not as a lab result, personality score, or permission slip.
Consumer HRV is not a diagnostic test. Seek clinical assessment for fainting, chest pain, sustained palpitations, severe breathlessness, neurological symptoms, or other concerning changes regardless of a wearable score. Do not change prescribed medication based on HRV data.
